Opossum Control & Removal in San Diego

Opossums, or possums as they’re commonly known, are the largest marsupial in the western hemisphere. Opossums can range in size between just larger than a house cat and as small as a mouse. They are omnivorous; eating plants, insects, small mammals and small reptiles. As long as they have a source of food and water nearby, they can remain in an area and will group together in families. Opossums are nocturnal and prefer dark, secure areas such as under homes, decks, sheds and garbage can areas.

Opossum Prevention

There are a few steps you can do to prevent Opossums from becoming interested in your property. Opossums are opportunistic omnivores, eliminating sources of food and water are the first steps in getting rid of these pests. Bring outdoor pet food inside at night. Make sure garbage can lids are secure after disposing of trash. Fruit tress and vegetable gardens also act as food sources and should be kept clean and free of fallen fruit and vegetables.

"Playing Possum"

When cornered or threatened, an Opossum will bare its teeth, hiss or play dead. Opossums have an incredible tolerance for pain and can fool you into thinking they’ve died by “playing possum” despite suffering major injury.
